ABOUT COPPEROPOLIS
The Copperopolis Community Center

The Old Congregational Church and the Union Guard Armory belong to the people of Copperopolis and have been taken care of by the Copperopolis Community Center since 1939.  Anyone living in Copperopolis can belong to the Community Center.  There is a Board of Directors whose purpose is to raise money to maintain and preserve these two buildings for future generations. 

Money is raised through various ways, including:

• Membership and individual monetary donations
• Annual Wine Tasting and Spaghetti Dinner in January
• Annual Homecoming held in September
• Monthly bingo games
• Rents paid by private clubs and individuals for the space
• Copperopolis Volunteer Fireman’s Melodrama Fundraiser
• Grant funding from private foundations

People can use either building by reserving it and making a donation to the Community Center.  The Old Congregational Church is used by the Crossroads Church and can also be rented for private family weddings and other celebrations.  The Armory is used regularly by local community groups, including the Ascension Episcopal Church each Sunday; the Copper Hopper Square Dance club; the Calaveras County Visiting Nurses Association; Calaveras County food distribution program; the American Legion; Habitat for Humanity; and other community groups.  Meetings and activities held for public service and philanthropic activities are not asked to donate, but are held responsible for cleaning up after their meeting.

Residents who love these two old buildings have donated many hours of volunteer work over the past 62 years.  These volunteers consist of individual people like Charlie and Rhoda Stone, who are now deceased, and the many present and past individuals who served as Directors and members of the Copperopolis Community Center.  Local businesses, associations and clubs support the Community Center.
